J&J Faces Mounting Legal Challenges Over Baby Powder Lawsuits
Multiple Blockages and a New Battlefront
Johnson & Johnson (J&J) has encountered significant setbacks and a new legal battleground in its ongoing baby powder lawsuits.
In New Jersey, J&J was twice denied bankruptcy protection for one of its subsidiaries facing thousands of lawsuits alleging harm from its talc-based powder. The company is now eyeing Texas as a potential venue for its next legal showdown, where it has filed a motion to move the cases.
Mounting Lawsuits and Growing Scrutiny
Over 50,000 lawsuits have been filed against J&J, alleging that its baby powder contained asbestos, a known carcinogen. A recent study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology has added weight to these claims.
In Oregon, a jury ordered J&J to pay $260 million to a woman who developed ovarian cancer after using the powder. This verdict adds to the growing financial and reputational damage the company faces.
Global Discontinuation and Settlement
Amidst the legal challenges, J&J announced it would discontinue sales of its talc-based baby powder globally by 2023. The company also agreed to pay Texas $61 million as part of a nationwide settlement.
