Olympic Breakdancing: Everything You Need to Know

The Sport of Breaking

Breakdancing, also known as b-boying, b-girling, or breaking, is a form of street dance that originated in the Bronx, New York City, in the 1970s. It is characterized by its dynamic moves, including spins, flips, and freezes, and its emphasis on improvisation and creativity.

Breaking has become increasingly popular in recent years, and it was officially added to the Summer Olympic program for the first time at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Olympic Breakdancing Rules

The Olympic breakdancing competition will be held in two divisions: men's and women's. Each division will feature 16 athletes who will compete in a single-elimination tournament.

The athletes will be judged on their technical skills, creativity, and overall performance. The judges will be looking for dancers who can execute difficult moves with precision and style, and who can show off their individuality and creativity.

The scoring system for the competition is as follows:

  • Technical skills: 50%
  • Creativity: 30%
  • Overall performance: 20%

Team USA

Team USA will be represented by two breakdancers at the 2024 Paris Olympics: Sunny Choi (B-Girl Sunny) and Logan Edra (B-Girl Logistx).

Choi is a two-time world champion and one of the most decorated breakdancers in the world. Edra is a rising star who has won several major competitions in recent years.

Team USA will be hoping to make a strong showing at the 2024 Olympics and bring home a medal in the sport of breaking.
